I was very interested to read in the Rotherham Advertiser last week about when Millmoor first became a football ground.
It was 100 years ago on 2nd September that Millmoor hosted its first football match, between the then Rotherham County and Leeds City Reserves.

A second half headed goal by Ian Sharps was enough to see the Millers through to the second round of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy at Field Mill last night.

If you were looking to start a new soap opera based on a football league club, then surely tonight’s opponents Mansfield Town would fit the bill.

Before the season’s out, I suspect that we’ll witness quite a few games like the one seen at Millmoor this afternoon. Lots of huff and puff but little end result and even less quality against no frills, mediocre opponents.

Hot shot Bobby Goals are My Hobby................. I believe that was what was on the Rotherham United mugs sold in the late 80’s when the now Chester City manager was knocking them in from all angles for the Merry Millers.

After a reasonably good start to the new campaign, it was with some trepidation that I travelled the 70 odd miles over the Pennines to Edgeley Park Stockport.

We’re on the road again this Saturday and make the short trip to the “Dark Side” over the Pennines to visit Stockport County. After a reasonably good start, the Hatters will surely provide the sternest test to date particularly on their home turf. It’s not so long back that we were playing each other in the Championship; now both clubs are aiming to begin the steep climb back up the league ladder after dropping into the basement.

I suppose that if I’d been offered a win and a defeat in our opening two home fixtures of the new season, I’d definitely have gone for the three points against Peterborough United rather than progressing into the next round of the Carling Cup.

Peterborough United? Mmmm, their last couple of years have been nearly as eventful as ours, including a documentary visit from Ron “early doors” Atkinson over a year ago, the walking out of their then manager before an important game in front of the film makers, then shortly after dream of dreams, interest and involvement from a young entrepreneur with big pockets Darragh McAnthony. Add to the mix new young manager Darren Ferguson…….and the omnipresent Bazza Fry and you have our opponents for today’s first home game of the new season!!

If you’re thinking of booking a British Holiday next summer, you could do worse than select the period around the opening day of the new football season. After the washout that was June and July, true to form Saturday’s opener against Hereford United was played out in blistering heat thus continuing trends set in previous years.
